My name is Rocky and I am a self-taught artist located in Tongva lands (San Gabriel Valley). I use he/him/his or they/them/theirs for my pronouns. Currently, I am honing my design and project management skills through service with the educational nonprofit, City Year Los Angeles. Within this role, I am creating numerous murals for public schools across LAUSD. Previously, I worked as a media intern for the Educational Opportunity Program at UCSB, and as a graphic design intern for the nonprofit, Luke Services International.
Graphic design in service of equitable representation is my mission. I am interested in projects that ask, 'How can vital information be best conveyed visually in order to reach local communities?' Every piece created must be both appealing in aesthetics and meaningful to the diverse people residing in Southern California. In striving to meet this goal, I have created many vibrant event flyers; newsletters chock full of resources; and recently, large murals that communicate core values. These digital designs prioritize culturally relevant imagery, community relevant values, and positive representations of people of color. My work counters historical narratives surrounding 'underserved' 'minority' communities and acts as the connective tissue linking the individual to our larger community networks of care.
As a Chinese-American who immigrated to SoCal, I have a deep sense of allyship with other communities of color. I am in support of power and liberation to my own Asian community, to the Latinx/Latine community, to the Black community, to the Indigenous community and any other group impacted by the legacy of colonial powers across the globe. I am also in support of LGBTQ+ people and I hope our struggles to be seen by a deeply troubled society will be recognized and redressed.
